Recruitment of subjects into the study was started last January 1984. Seven (7) patients, 3 males and 4 females were enrolled. Six (6) were classified as moderate ALRI and 1 as severe ALRI. Nasotracheal aspirate and blood specimens were cultured prior to antibiotic therapy. All patients had bacterial pathogens isolated from the nasotracheal aspirate. (Five (5) had mixed culture of Strep. pneumoniae, H. influenzae and Strep. viridans. All 6 strains of Strep. pneumoniae were sensitivie to penicillin and chloramphenicol while 2 were resistant to penicillin. Serum antibiotic level was measured in 5 cases. (Author)
